The CIP-FoodSTART+ and FishCORAL, both IFAD-funded grant and loan projects respectively, jointly organized and facilitated the FishCORAL’s Aqua-based Business School (ABS) Training of Facilitators (TOF) held on 17-21 December in Davao City, Philippines. ABS, a brand-new participatory learning approach, is an adaptation of  the International Potato Center‘s (CIP) Farmer Business School (FBS) tailor-made for FishCORAL in the Philippines. The trainees are Community Facilitators (CFs) under the FishCORAL project and Fisheries and Livelihood Development Technicians (FLDTs) under the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – the implementing agency of the project – coming from the different parts of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). This is the first TOF of its kind in the country and the new approach will be piloted in the region starting in January 2018. CIP-FoodSTART+ team were the Resource Persons of training.

The FBS approach was first developed by CIP in 2008 through a project supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in West and Central Java, Indonesia. In 2012 through the CIP-FoodSTART project, the Second Cordillera Highland Agricultural Resource Management Project (CHARMP2) adapted and implemented FBS in six provinces in the Cordillera, Philippines. In 2014, FoodSTART worked with the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) and CIP gender specialists to strengthen the responsiveness of the farmer business school approach to gender dynamics and to climate change processes.  Currently in FoodSTART+, FBS with climate change and gender perspective approach is also being implemented with other IFAD investment projects in Philippines (INREMP), and India (Megha-LAMP).
